John Lewis the Pirate
It is believed John hid his treasure in his grave before his demise. That would explain why it is dug down so deep. Apparently therehad been a 2,000 acre plantation & this cemetery is the last remaining relic. It is said he was a general in the Civil War & he had a hatred for Cajuns. He'd forbade his family from mingling with Cajuns & homeschooled them. One of his daughters, Mary, had fallen in love with a Cajun boy & John wouldn't lety them be together. In grief she hanged herself. Her headstone is among the pics below.

Ascension Parish Negro Fairgrounds
I've had this church on my list for awhile & it is still locked up, so no inside shots. I wasn't aware right next door were fairgrounds established as the Ascension Parish Negro Fairgrounds. There isn't much left & I shot the only standing building left. There was a bit of a playground with some people on it so I didn't shoot it. Established in 1950, some citizens established the place to encourage farming in the community. Here's a link to one of the only web sites about the place. ~ https://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=85750
