Wisteria Hotel

The Wisteria Hotel in Winona, Mississippi, is a historic landmark with a rich history dating back to its construction in 1910 by W.B. and Delia Van Kirk. Designed by renowned architect R.H. Hunt, this three-and-a-half-story Colonial Revival building became a bustling hub during the 1920s and 1930s, largely due to its proximity to the Illinois Central and Southern Railway lines. The hotel’s original design featured wraparound galleries on the upper floors, adding to its grandeur. Unfortunately, a fire in 1933, which also destroyed the nearby Winona Hotel, led to the loss of these galleries.

Despite this setback, the Wisteria Hotel remains one of Mississippi’s notable surviving wooden railroad hotels. Its architectural significance lies in its classical design elements, which include a prominent gabled dormer, a Palladian window, and a heavy boxed cornice. The hotel was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and later became a key element of the Winona Commercial Historic District and the broader Winona Historic District.
